Imagine a world where Saudi Arabia, fueled by its vast energy reserves, becomes a dominant force in the AI revolution. Aramco's CEO, Amin Nasser, has a bold vision: to leverage the kingdom's cheap energy – both natural gas and renewables – to transform it into a global AI data center powerhouse. Aramco, the world's largest oil company, recently announced its plan to acquire a significant minority stake in Humain, a new AI company launched in May and majority-owned by Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund, PIF. Nasser envisions Humain becoming Saudi Arabia's national AI champion, aiming for a leadership position on the world stage. Humain's CEO, Tareq Amin, even boldly stated that Saudi Arabia aims to become the third biggest player in AI globally, trailing only the U.S. and China. That's a huge ambition!
Nasser emphasizes Saudi Arabia's unique advantage: readily available and incredibly affordable energy. "Here, if you want renewable, you will find the lowest cost renewable," he stated. "If you want gas, you will find the lowest cost gas. Energy is available and land is also available to build all these things." This is crucial because data centers, especially those training and running AI applications, are energy hogs. They require massive amounts of electricity, typically generated by renewables or natural gas. Nasser predicts these facilities will consume almost four times the electricity of the entire global electric vehicle fleet by 2030! Primarily powered by gas, with a growing contribution from renewables, these data centers are central to Saudi Arabia's AI ambitions.
Aramco is putting its money where its mouth is. A significant portion of its capital spending is dedicated to boosting natural gas production by over 60% by 2030 to meet this surging demand. This, alongside the investment in Humain, demonstrates a clear commitment to this strategic shift. Aramco is targeting massive capital expenditures, ranging from $52 billion to $58 billion this year alone.
But here's where it gets controversial... While investing heavily in AI and renewables, Aramco also maintains a strong belief in the continued growth of oil and gas demand for decades to come, particularly driven by consumption in developing markets, especially in Asia. Nasser projects demand will grow by 1.1 million to 1.3 million barrels per day this year and almost the same in 2026. "There is huge potential for growth in emerging economies," he stated. This dual focus – investing in AI while predicting continued fossil fuel growth – raises some interesting questions about sustainability and the long-term energy transition.
